The Liebman Institute for Science Innovation (LISI) at McHenry County College (MCC) invites the community to "Common Bonds: The Science of Welding" on Saturday, August 8, from 9 a.m.–12 p.m. at the College’s Crystal Lake campus, 8900 U.S. Hwy. 14.
From agricultural equipment and iron bridges to outdoor sculptures, welding is the invisible backbone supporting the structures and industries that shape McHenry County. This interactive program explores the science behind this in-demand trade and the process of joining two separate pieces of metal into one solid object.
Participants will work alongside MCC Welding and Chemistry faculty through live demonstrations and hands-on lab explorations. Attendees will see MCC’s welding robot in action, learn about welding safety, explore the chemistry that makes welding possible, and use professional tools to create their own custom metal keepsake to take home.
The program will also explore the fascinating science of "cold welding" in outer space, where clean metal surfaces can fuse together instantly without heat or traditional welding tools.
The event will take place in the Foglia Center for Advanced Technology and Innovation (Building G) and the Liebman Science Center (Building F) at MCC. It is open to ages 18 and older. Tickets are $11 for general admission and $6 for seniors ages 65 and older. Space is limited, and registration is required.
