Nursing—Associate in Arts (AA) Degree

Nurses provide and coordinate patient care, educate patients and the public about various health conditions, and provide advice and emotional support to patients and their families.

The nursing program at McHenry County College is designed to prepare individuals to function as professional nurses in a variety of healthcare settings including hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, private homes, and offices. The program prepares graduates for this dynamic and ever-changing field by:

  • Including 12 hours a week of hands-on clinical instruction in a hospital or healthcare setting beginning with the first semester, and continuing throughout the program
  • Offering multiple technology-based educational opportunities, ensuring graduates are well-versed in, and prepared to use, the technological tools and systems that are the standard in healthcare today
  • Partnering with four-year institutions to allow students easy transition into a BSN program after graduating from MCC
  • Offering flexible programs for working adults, such as the LPN to ADN Bridge Program

The MCC nursing program is approved by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, the Illinois Community College Board, and the Illinois Board of Higher Education. Graduates of the program are eligible to take the National Council of State Boards of Nursing Examination (NCLEX-RN®), which may lead to licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse (RN).

Students entering the nursing program must pass a criminal background check, carry personal health insurance, have an American Heart Association BLS (CPR) certification and be a Certified Nursing Assistant.

The nursing program is approved by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation and is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) 3343 Peachtree Road NE, Suite 850, Atlanta, GA 30326, 404-975-5000, www.acenursing.org.
